For you are (A)a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be (B)a people for His personal possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the [a]earth.

(C)The Lord did not [b]make you His beloved nor choose you because you were greater in number than any of the peoples, since you were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the (D)oath which He swore to your forefathers, (E)the Lord brought you out by a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of [c]slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God, (F)He is God, (G)the faithful God, (H)who keeps [d]His covenant and [e]His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who (I)love Him and keep His commandments; 10 but He (J)repays those who hate Him to [f]their faces, to eliminate [g]them; He will not hesitate toward him who hates Him, He will repay him to his face. 11 Therefore, you shall keep the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which I am commanding you today, to do them.

Promises of God

12 (K)Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the Lord your God will keep [h]His covenant with you and [i]His faithfulness which He swore to your forefathers. 13 And He will (L)love you, bless you, and (M)make you numerous; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain, your new wine, and your oil, the newborn of your cattle and the offspring of your flock, [j]in the land which He swore to your forefathers to give you.

“And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to (A)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners (B)so that they [a]will be seen by people. (C)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But as for you, when you pray, (D)go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and (E)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

“And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their (F)many words. So do not be like them; for (G)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

The Lord’s Prayer

(H)Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father, who is in heaven,
[b]Hallowed be Your name.
10 [c](I)Your kingdom come.
(J)Your will be done,
[d]On earth as it is in heaven.
11 (K)Give us this day [e]our daily bread.
12 And (L)forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation, but (M)deliver us from [f](N)evil.[g]

14 (O)For if you forgive other people for their [h]offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But (P)if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your [i]offenses.

Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth

16 “Now (Q)whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they [j]distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting. (R)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. 17 But as for you, when you fast, [k](S)anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your (T)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

God’s Gracious Dealings

“All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, so that you (A)may live and increase, and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord swore to give to your forefathers. (B)And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has (C)led you in the wilderness these forty years, in order to humble you, (D)putting you to the test, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. And He humbled you and let you go hungry, and fed you with the manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, in order to make you [a]understand that (E)man shall not live on bread alone, but man shall live on everything that comes out of the mouth of the Lord. (F)Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. (G)So you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son. Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to [b]fear Him. For (H)the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you will eat food without shortage, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10 When (I)you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.

11 “Be careful that you do not (J)forget the Lord your God by failing to keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His statutes which I am commanding you today; 12 otherwise, (K)when you eat and are satisfied, and you build good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have increases, 14 then your heart will [c]become proud and you will (L)forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of [d]slavery; 15 He who led you through (M)the great and terrible wilderness, with its (N)fiery serpents and scorpions, and its thirsty ground where there was no water; He who (O)brought water for you out of the rock of flint. 16 In the wilderness it was He who fed you manna (P)which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to (Q)put you to the test, to do good for you [e]in the end. 17 Otherwise, (R)you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’ 18 But you are to remember the Lord your God, for (S)it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And it shall come about, if you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods and serve and worship them, (T)I testify against you today that you will certainly perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lord eliminates from you, so (U)you shall perish, because you would not listen to the voice of the Lord your God.

19 (A)Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves (B)treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for (C)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 (D)The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is [a]clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if (E)your eye is [b]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

24 (F)No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [c](G)wealth.

The Cure for Anxiety

25 (H)For this reason I say to you, [d]do not be (I)worried about your [e]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 (J)Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? 27 And which of you by (K)worrying can (L)add a single [f]day to his [g]life’s span? 28 And why are you (M)worried about clothing? Notice how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin thread for cloth, 29 yet I say to you that not even (N)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the (O)grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? (P)You of little faith! 31 Do not (Q)worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for (R)your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But [h]seek first [i]His kingdom and His righteousness, and (S)all these things will be [j]provided to you.

34 “So do not (T)worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will [k]worry about itself. [l]Each day has enough trouble of its own.
